Our Old Rectory setting is located in Burslem. The nursery has half an acre of outdoor space and is the setting of many of our Forest School sessions.
We accept and encourage parents wanting to use funded hours as part of a paid place.
The Old Rectory is open from 07:45 to 17:45 Monday to Friday for 51 weeks of the year (closed for Christmas week and Bank Holidays).
Our Outdoor Area
We are fortunate to be able to offer a wonderful outdoor space. We believe that some of the most important lessons in life take place outside of a ‘classroom’ . Our large outdoor space incorporates various different areas:
- A soft surface play area for risk-taking physical play such as obstacle courses
- A wildlife garden which is ideal for den building and nature trails
- A bark area for messy play in the mud kitchen
- An allotment area for growing fruit, vegetables and herbs
- A lawn area surrounded by trees, providing an ideal spot for afternoon picnics and observing nature
- A large beautiful log cabin which provides shelter from the sun and rain, and another seasonal themed learning area
We have a large open-plan room that caters for our youngest children. The room offers opportunities for social, creative, and physical play, but also cosy areas for relaxation and calmness, with a 'sensory room' adjoining the main room.
Our babies have direct access to their own designated outside play area that looks out on to the rest of the garden. This is a safe and fun area for them to explore and expand their world, introducing the joy and sensations of the great outdoors and practice their physical skills as they become increasingly mobile.
The individual feed and sleep patterns of each of our babies are respected and followed. We believe great communication is key to a smooth flow between home and nursery, so our Little Hedgehogs staff work closely with parents to ensure each child’s routine is consistent.
This is a bright open room with patio doors straight on to our wonderful outside play area, allowing for lots of active free flow play throughout the day. The room is set up to encourage a toddler’s natural curiosity, the resources and activities in the room provide lots of exciting opportunities for learning and for developing of new skills.
The focus within the toddler room is on motoric development, creativity, learning social skills, and language development.
The individual potty-training requirements and routines of each of our toddlers are respected and followed. We believe great communication is key to a smooth flow between home and nursery, so our staff work closely with parents to ensure each child’s routine is consistent.
The Wise Owls room is where our staff introduce more play-based learning and concentration tasks to prepare the children ready for school.
At this stage staff are guiding and challenging the children to explore new and exciting interests by making good use of children's natural curiosity and desire for adventure.
Preschool is where the staff really focus on encouraging the children to persevere, overcome challenges and develop independence.
The Dining Room
We strongly believe in providing a healthy and interesting menu for our children with meals being freshly cooked each day by our onsite chef. The dining room provides an ideal setting for our self-service lunches.
The children lay the table – using placemats, glassware, cutlery, crockery, and serviettes - and serve their own meals and drinks (spillages don't matter, it is all part of their learning).
Self-service meals offer a great way to embed learning about the importance of a balanced diet and portion allocation.
Even at mealtimes we are we utilising the opportunity to build important life skills, promoting independence and encouraging social interaction.
Meals are also served 'Al Fresco' during the warmer weather and our late afternoon mealtime provides a great opportunity for a picnic on the grass.
We are proud owners of a Healthy Eating Award from the NHS and a Food for Life Award.
